Ultimate Guide To Taiping Lake Gardens

From Mines To Meadows – The Transformation history of Taiping :Lake Gardens

Meandering through the Lake Gardens, I watched as the golden sun pierced through the canopy of the rain trees. Rustling leaves and singing birds punctuated the moment.  I gazed the lotus carpeted lake in awe.  How this   64-hectare park was remarkably transformed from abandoned tin mining pits into Malaysia’s first public garden in 1880

My curiosity deepens for the search of history that contributed to this evolution.

Looking at this vintage photograph, it’s hard to imagine that the very ground I stand on was once a rugged, excavated pit. The transformation from these deep scars in the earth to the meadows we enjoy today is a testament to the resilience of nature

A Living Historical Landmark

  • The Transformation Story: this 64-hectare park was remarkably transformed from abandoned tin mining pits into Malaysia’s first public garden in 1880 during the British colonial era.

The man behind this idea was Robert Sandilands Frond Walker. He also was the founder of Perak Club in Taiping 1881.  These 64 hectares mind blowing masterpiece was designed by town planner Charles Compton Reade.

He designed ten interconnected lakes.

This abandoned tin mine was donated by Chung Keng Quee for public use. He was a millionaire philanthropist and innovator of the mining of tin.  He belongs to the Chinese secret society during the colonial era.

The town is often referred to as the “Town of Everlasting Peace,” a name it earned following the cessation of the Larut Wars in the 19th century

Welcome to the modern lake today

A welcome sign to modern day Lake Gardens

“Welcome to serenity, silence and surrender” a better translation for 3 qualities found in the gardens

my name is Shilpa. I created this space for likeminded travelers who, feel a restless urge to see the world—a feeling known as Wanderlust. Whether I am standing under the Venetian sky, breathing in the view of Emerald waters dotted with gondolas, or drifting along the quiet ‘liquid roads’
